S. Korea initials free trade agreement with Canada

South Korea has initialed the bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) with Canada, according to a statement released by the nation’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).

The Korean government’s deputy trade minister Choi Gyung-lim and his Canadian counterpart lan Burney initialed the FTA in Seoul on the previous day and agreed to formally sign the deal in the second half of this year.

The two nations announced the conclusion of their trade deal negotiations in March, eight years and eight months after the talks began. The FTA is expected to take effect next year if the trade pact is officially signed and ratified by the Korean National Assembly without delays in the process.

The two partners agreed to remove tariffs on most of their trade products by uniformly cutting back on them every year within 10 years after the FTA goes into effect. They also compromised by
agreeing to abolish tariffs on 97.5 percent of their trade products based on the number of trade items.

Under the trade pact, Korea is expected to enjoy an advantage in industrial products such as automobiles, and Canada will gain regarding livestock such as beef by opening up the market. Canada agreed to gradually lift the current 6.1 percent tariff on imported cars from Korea that account for 42.8 percent of Korea’s total exports to

Canada and are valued at $2.2 billion, upon the effectuation of the pact, and scrap 100 percent of the tariff two years later. Tariffs on Korea’s home appliances are set to be lifted either immediately or three years after the deal takes effect, depending on electronics products.

Car Industry Trend in May

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (Minister Yoon Sang-Jick) announced that domestic sales recorded year-on-year growth of 3.0% in May, a fifth consecutive month of growth, according to the estimates of the car industry for May.

However, production (373,470 units) and export (255,187 units) declined by down 3.0% and down 5.1% year-on-year due to there being less business days. Domestic sales maintained the growth trend for a fifth consecutive month thanks to the effect of the launch of new cars and growing demand for RVs, but the growth has been significantly slowed compared to the period from January to April.

In particular, a decline in exports was recorded in four months of growth due to declines of exports by GM Korea to EU and Eastern Europe. The automotive production volume for May was recorded at 373,470 units, a year-on-year decline of 3.0% due to there being less business days. Despite the weak consumer demand and less business days, the domestic sales recorded growth for five consecutive months with year-on-year growth of 3.0% thanks to the effect of the launch of new cars and growing demand for RVs.

The sales volume of imported cars for May was recorded at 15,314 units, with year-on-year growth of 14.2%, thanks to the continued robust sales of German brand cars. Meanwhile, the export volume of the automotive sector for May was recorded at 255,187 units, a year-on-year decline of 5.1%, due to the decline in exports by GM Korea to EU and Eastern Europe.

Newly emerging hot competition between top-ranked automakers of S. Korea and Japan

Top-ranked automakers of South Korea and Japan are in a fierce competition race toward preemptive release of in-vehicle semiconductors, an area considered as one of current hottest industrial realms for the next-generation smart car business.

Japanese top-ranked car maker Toyota began its development steps for such semiconductors in the late-1990s, being one step ahead of Hyundai Motor in the vehicle semiconductor field. But Hyundai Motor, which joined the development in 2012, is rapidly snapping at the Japanese carmaker’s heels by increasing investment in research and development (R&D). The expectations are high that the gap will be narrowed soon, given the fact that Korea has considerable expertise in the semiconductor field.

Hyundai Motor Group said Thursday it would build an R&D center for developing vehicles’ electronic management and in-vehicle semiconductor in Dangjeong, Gunpo city, Gyeonggi province from the second half of this year. The new center will reportedly be based in a location near the headquarters of Hyundai KEFICO, which is in charge of the group’s electronic management. “We aim to fully build the center by the first half of next year with an estimated 100 billion won (about $97.9 million) investment in the construction,” said an official at Hyundai Motors.

Hyundai Motor Group recently noted that it would build an R&D center for developing vehicles’ electronics management and in-vehicle semiconductors in Dangjeong, Gunpo city, Gyeonggi province from the second half of this year. The new center will reportedly be based in a location near the headquarters of Hyundai KEFICO, which is in charge of the group’s electronic management. It aims to fully build the center by the first half of next year with an estimated 100 billion won ($97.9 million) investment in the construction.

Meanwhile, the strong rival Toyota has already developed and decided to embed silicon carbide (SiC), a compound of silicon and carbon, in power control components of hybrids.

S. Korea’s trends of exports & imports for May 2014

Korea’s exports for May 2014 amounted to US$47.9 billion, a year-on-year decreased of 0.9%, and the nation’s imports during the same month reached at US$42.5 billion, a year-on-year increase of 0.3%. The trade surplus was US$5.3 billion, marking a 28th consecutive month of surplus.

Although the daily average exports reached US$2.23 billion, the second highest in Korea’s history, the export amount decreased slightly due to a reduction in operating days.

Exports of ships and oil products grew, and exports to the EU and the USA were robust. While exports of ships (growth of deliveries of offshore plants), steel (robust exports of hot rolled steel sheet, a key export item) and oil products (increase in unit price for exports) grew, there was a decline in the exports of cars, semiconductors (fewer operating days), LCDs (decline in panel unit price) and mobile devices (base effect and inventory accumulation in Europe and China) declined.

Inspired by recovered economies in some advanced nations, exports to the EU (growth of capital goods including IT parts) and the USA (robust exports of durable goods including cars and raw materials including steel and oil products) grew, while there was a decline in exports to China (weak exports of raw materials including oil products and general machinery) and ASEAN (weak exports of capital goods including ships and general machinery, and the political uncertainty in Thailand).

Exports to Japan, which had grown for two consecutive months thanks to the base effect, began to decline due to weak exports of capital goods. Meanwhile, imports of commodities increased, while imports of raw materials and capital goods decreased.

Of the five raw materials, imports of oil products (increase of heavy oil imports due to operation of the advanced equipment) and steel increased, while imports of crude oil (regular maintenance of facilities) and gases decreased.

Imports of capital goods such as industrial machinery and car parts increased, while imports of semiconductors and equipment for semiconductor manufacturing decreased. Of the commodities, imports of cars are continuously growing. As a result, the daily average exports for May were the second highest in Korea’s history, and the daily average exports from January to May (US$2.11 billion) increased by 4.4%, causing Korean exports to steadily grow.

The export amount, however, decreased slightly in May due to a reduction in operating days (1.5days) and the voluntary holiday of May 2. It is expected that Korea will continuously expand exports given the recovery of the advanced economies, including the USA and the EU.

Integrated management system for piping stabilization

[INQ. NO. 1407M20] KLES’s PLUMBER, as an integrated management system for piping stabilization, is designed to monitor the 3-D behavior of plant pipes in operation in a real-time basis under high temperature and pressure, including the temperature of pipelines and the state of piping support devices by installing PLUMBER on the parts from a boiler or a turbine.

https://korean-machinery.com///inquiry And it is the best solution for plumbing integrity evaluation for generating units and securing the safety, by managing and monitoring the system remotely after constructing the relevant database including the drawings and history management of plumbing and piping support devices.

There are many necessities for a versatile system. Due to the operating condition of base load unit, which is operated under severe service conditions with high temperature and pressure for a long period, there might be material degradation, mechanical degradation and deformation taking place in the pipelines connecting the turbine of the generating unit with the boiler. Moreover, the thermal expansion and shrinkage due to frequent vibration and repetition of start and stop may cause interference to the piping and stress concentration, which may lead to turbine vibration or damage to the joints of the super heater.

1407M20 The hangers installed in power plants enable measurement that is only one-dimensional (Y-axis direction) displacement. Currently, piping management at each power plant is limited to recording related to hanger guidelines before and after O/H, so that the 3-D displacement occurring in pipelines during operation may not be detected, which leads to impracticability of preparing basic preventive measures and dependence on short-term maintenance.

1407M20_1 Even though many piping support devices, such as hangers and snubbers, are installed at each power plant in order to support the self-load and thermal expansion load in operation, proper management is not carried out due to lack of awareness and of management for piping support devices.

Most pipelines are installed in geometric 3-D structure. In cases where pipelines fail to expand according to the design, or they are expanded excessively due to false operation of piping support devices, interference of structures or design fault of plumbing, serious economic damage may take place due to shut down and accidental maintenance caused by unexpected damage to pipelines including cracks and ruptures. It is feared that safety accidents may take place as most of the piping support devices are installed in danger areas such as high places or hot places.

KLES_1 Operators can secure piping integrity on the basis of prediction of vulnerable points and countermeasures. It is possible to secure piping integrity on the basis of predicting vulnerable points and countermeasures through comparative analyses between measured displacement acquired from the 3-D displacement measuring instrument and initially designed displacement.

KLES_2 By minimizing the access of workers to high places, the solution reduces the occurrence of safety accidents in advance. Most piping support devices are installed in danger areas such as high places or hot places where maintenance checks are not easy and there is quite a high possibility of safety accidents, so that such accidents may be prevented by checking hangers through IP cameras.

KLES_3 This system monitors the pipelines and piping support devices on a real-time basis. The stability may be secured by designating weak points through interpretation of plumbing stress and analyzing collected data through real-time monitoring of degradation degree and temperature at major parts of pipelines, including the condition of piping support devices.

And it has been ascertained that damage to hangers occurs repeatedly as the hangers are replaced in the short run without cause analysis in case of damage to piping support devices and abnormal displacement. In order to prevent recurrence of damage and evaluate integrity of piping and support devices, it is important to carry out 3-D displacement analysis for the entire plumbing.
