Hyundai Rotem wins contract to supply $80.8mn tram construction in Turkey

South Korea’s leading railways systems provider Hyundai Rotem recently said that it has won its first tram supply contract overseas. Hyundai Rotem said it signed a contract to provide 38 low floor tram units with a catenary (one unit has five vehicles) to Turkish builder Gulermak, which is constructing two tram tracks totaling 22.3 kilometers in length in Izmir. The contract is worth 83.7 billion won ($80.8 million).

An official at Hyundai Rotem said “The contract is significant as it symbolizes our first entry into the global tram market which continues growth. With this contract, we will do our utmost to expand exports of Korean-made trams to other countries in the Middle East and Europe.”

The tram, an environmentally friendly mode of transportation that was well received in Europe, Japan, the United States and elsewhere, runs on street rails with electricity. The company already developed a low floor tram with or without a catenary in cooperation with Korea Railroad Research Institute after about 41 months of research since December 2009. The catenaryfree tram can run 50 kilometers with one-time charge. Turkey is one of Hyundai Rotem’s major markets. Hyundai Rotem has won contracts to supply a total of 1,006 cars, including the latest one of 120 cars for lzmir subway system in 2012.
