A Gyeonggi-based specialty measuring instrument manufacturer Woojin is operating its multiple business portfolios based on instruments for nuclear power plants for global industrial demands for its flagship items.

This year’s most representative item of the company for the overseas market is its fixed incore detector Ass’y. The other word for fixed incoredetector Ass’y is In-Core Instrument Assembly(ICI Ass’y). The ICI Ass’y is fitted to a nuclear reactor. It is used to measure real-time signals of tridimensional neutron flux distribution by the fission process. Therefore, The ICI Ass’y is the most fundamental detector for measuring power distribution and burn-up rate of nuclear fuels.

The ICI Ass’y detects neutrons to be generated by fission process with installation in a Pressurized-Water Reactor(PWR).
The Korea Standard Nuclear Plant(KSNP) currently is PWR nuclear power plant in South Korea. KSNP has 1,000 MWe of electrical output.

KSNP is a more advanced nuclear power plant than Yonggwang unit3,4 by designed jointly South Korea and the United States. KSNP has improved much in the safety, the convenience of operation and the construction time of nuclear power plants.

Today, the PWRs on planting and constructing are increasing in South Korea. There are also under construction in China and India. The United States had taken into consideration the plan of PWR plants due to rising gas prices and an electric power shortage, too.

The core material in ICI Ass’y is neutron detector that generates proportional current of neutron flux to be generated by fission process. In addition, the thermocouple in ICI Ass’y generates a proportional thermo-electromotive force(emf) by the temperature at reactor coolant outlet position. The two signals are uploaded to a central control panel directly for the safe operating utilization of nuclear reactor.

The total length of ICI Ass’ymeasures 35m. The ICI Ass’y consists of the five neutron detectors, one thermocouple to measure core outlet temperature, one background detector to correct detection signals, and eight filler cables.

For the stable operation of the ICI Ass’y, the necessary options are: heat durability – normal operation up to 750 ºF; pressure resistance – normal operation from 15 psig to 2500 psig; and radioactivity resistance – normal operation at 4 x 105Gy (4 x 107).
