[INQ. NO. 1601M57] Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. has become a leader in the power and water sectors, having produced 14 world-class products, including the seawater desalination plant it built in 2001 and other various products, including its crankshaft and reactor vessel.

The Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy selects as ‘World-Class Products of Korea’ products with distinctly competitive features and which boast of a global market share of over 5% and ranks within the global top five among companies that record an annual global sales of over US $ 50 million.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s flagship world-class product is the seawater desalination plant, as revealed in how it has maintained the number one spot in its field worldwide. Doosan has secured its international competitiveness by developing advanced
technologies, shortening the delivery lead time and improving product quality, in the face of the stiff competition being posed by European and Japanese global companies who started entering the market in the late 1970s.


In the 2000s, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction won the largest number of desalination plant contracts in the Middle East, including the Fujairah, UAE and Shuaibah, Saudi Arabia, and also occupied the largest share of the global market (27%). In fact, for the past 30 years, Doosan has been awarded a total of 28 seawater desalination projects across the Middle East, including in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.

Seawater desalination plants can be largely divided into three types; Multi-Stage Flash (MSF), MED and Reverse Osmosis (RO). Doosan is the only company in the world that has the technologies and expertise for all three methods.

In particular, as the leading desalination solutions provider, Doosan has succeeded in shortening the lead time remarkably by developing the world’s first One- Module manufacturing method, which involves assembling the evaporator, which is the size of a soccer field, all in one and shipping it on a large barge to the local site.

Along with the seawater desalination plant, Doosan’s other distinctive world-class item is the reactor vessel installed in nuclear power plants. The reactor is a cylindrical pressure vessel that generates heat through nuclear fuel fission. It is the core facility of a nuclear
power plant that delivers high-temperature and pressurized cooling water to the steam generator. The Korean-designed nuclear power plant model, the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR 1400), is an advanced pressurized water nuclear reactor, a large facility with a height of 14.8m, a diameter of 5.5m, and a weight of 530 tons. Doosan has supplied a total of 19 units to clients across the world since its first production in 1987.


Doosan’s advanced reactor vessel is designed for the APR 1400, developed by domestic engineering entities, such as Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, KEPCO Engineering & Construction and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction. It features an extended life
cycle of 60 years, thereby reducing the cost of nuclear power plants significantly.

In December 2013, two items developed by Doosan were selected as world-class products – the integral head and excitation system for nuclear power plants. One year later, the 3MW wind turbine, WinDS3000™ was selected as a Next-Generation World-Class product.

The integral head is made of cast and forged material which cover the upper and lower parts of the reactor vessel and steam generator, all of which are core facilities of nuclear power plants. The integral head developed by Doosan is the all-in-one type built without welding, so that the shut-down period can be minimized for maintenance inspection during plant operation. Doosan’s product currently has the largest global market share. The excitation system is a core component of nuclear power plants that controls the output voltage of the generator. Doosan supplied the world’s first digital excitation system with three current controllers for a more stable operation.

WinDS3000™ is the offshore 3MW wind power system which was internationally certified for the first time in Asia in 2011. It boasts of greatly strengthened safety and stability, helping to increase resistance to typhoons and warm currents. In addition, WinDS3000™
which was developed using Doosan’s very own technologies, guarantees quick maintenance and repair, thereby reducing operating costs.
