Hyundai Motor to launch pilot project introducing fuel-cell taxis and car-sharing service

https://korean-machinery.com///inquiry South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. said recently that it will introduce hydrogen-powered taxis in Ulsan, South Gyeongsang, and fuel cell car-sharing service in Gwangju, South Jeolla, in November as part of a pilot project aimed to promote and popularize environmental-friendly vehicles in the industry.

Hydrogen-powered cars are considered as nextgeneration vehicles that do not discharge pollutants such as fine dust. Hyundai Motor introduced its first fuel cell electric vehicle for the Tucson sport utility vehicle in 2013 with a driving range of 415 kilometers on a single charge that takes about 3 minutes. Unlike electric vehicles that use electric power stored in a battery as energy, hydrogen electric vehicles are able to produce energy using their own fuel cells.

Hyundai Motor’s latest pilot project is aimed at advancing the era of hydrogen-powered vehicles by promoting them via taxis that are common means of transportation in the country and also car-sharing service that has been rapidly attracting users. Once the Korea’s leading automaker concludes that the market for fuel cell vehicles has the potential to grow, it would expedite the establishment of related infrastructure nationwide.

As part of the first stage of the pilot project, Hyundai Motor plans to introduce 10 Tucson fuel cell model taxis in Ulsan by November and an additional five each in Ulsan and Gwangju by the first half of 2017. In the second phase of the project, the company aims to expand target regions in the country.

Hyundai Motor expects the pilot project to pick up speed in the first half of 2018 when it unveils its new fuel cell electric vehicle model in the market. The carmaker plans to introduce 100 hydrogen-powered taxis in five regions – 20 each – with established infrastructure for vehicle charging.

According to Hyundai Motor, taxi operators in each region will be in charge of maintenance and operation of fuel cell taxis, while the automaker of car will supports vehicle purchases and aftersales service.

When it comes to the fuel cell car-sharing service that will be introduced in November in Gwangju, J’car, a local startup nurtured by Gwangju Creative Economy Innovation Center, will operate 30 vehicles – 15 hydrogen-powered electric vehicles and 15 electric vehicles. Cost for buying the vehicles will be covered jointly by Hyundai Venture Investment Corp. invested by Hyundai Motor Group that manages hydrogen funds and L&S Venture Capital that manages business funds for new technologies. Hyundai Motor will be responsible for aftersales service.

J’car plans to expand the car-sharing service in the first half of 2018 when Hyundai Motor unveils its new hydrogen fuel cell model. It aims to manage 160 vehicles in 2018 for the car-sharing service and 300 in 2020 by expanding the service to other South Jeolla regions in addition to Gwangju.

Ssangyong teams up with Mahindra, LG U+ in connected car vehicle

https://korean-machinery.com///inquiry South Korea’s Ssangyong Motor Co., owned by India’s Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said recently that it has teamed up with Tech Mahindra Co. and LG Uplus Corp. to develop connected cars. A connected car refers to a car equipped with Internet access which enables data transfer with other devices both inside as well as outside the vehicle and gives the driver remote access to the car.

The three companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop and launch a service platform for connected cars within the next three years.

Under the deal, Ssangyong Motor will develop the car interior system. Tech Mahindra will work on the telematics platform, which enables remote access to vehicles and also security and safety monitoring. LG Uplus will provide the wireless network and also develop in-vehicle infotainment contents.

Tech Mahindra is an information and communications technology (ICT) unit of Indian auto giant Mahindra & Mahindra and largest shareholder in Ssangyong. It boasts annual sales of 4.5 trillion won and a work force of 107,000 IT professionals, a client base of more than 800 firms worldwide.

Ssangyong Motor has been ramping up cooperation for next-generation car development. It joined the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA), a Google Inc.-led global alliance of technology and auto industry leaders based on the Android platform, last June.

Yoon Byung-do, a senior official at the automaker said recently that the MoU paves the way for Ssangyong to sharpen its competitive edge in the smart car market.

Existing fabrication processes are composed of a total of three steps where all components are made individually and then welded, which is very wasteful for materials, requires much energy-use in the manufacturing, and there is great concern about defective forming in welding or damage in the neck area. In order to improve such flaws, parts fabrication processes were developed through this research task; making precise forming with cold multi-former and forming the shape after removing stress from the materials and surface treatment, which consequently reduced the processes dramatically. Moreover, developing technology that can manufacture parts economically having not just high yield but also superiority in terms of characteristics allows securing competitiveness.

In this regard, Ho-gwon Seo, CEO of Sindo High Tech explained, “After designing dies for each process based on developed process blueprint, we had to undergo many trials and errors because we could not have expected results in the course of manufacturing actual dies through feasibility study and testing trial produces due to many causes. We made steady and persistent efforts to improve program interpretation and mold design technique based on the results from such trial and error, and finally could solve the problems by the aid of cooperative organizations.” Development of integral ROD-A by securing four core element technologies In existing production processes for ROD-A, hole unit and circular unit were produced separately and passed through the welding process before being supplied as a component. However, that process was so wasteful for materials that there was a problem that reduces productivity and durability significantly in the welding process of making separated parts into one integral component. In order to solve this problem, Sindo High Tech developed integral ROD-A for final shape forming using primary product forming and high load press through cold multi-former.

The first core technology is cold extrusion multiforging method and mold design technology. It is possible to design a method that considers forming volume and forming energy for each step and molds for which dimension changes caused by elastic recovery in the molds and the materials are considered. The second core technology is forming interpreting technique based on the finite element method. Based on the finite element method, it is possible to have techniques for breaking prediction and coupled analysis, considering flow stress in materials interpreting the forming and using damage models.

The third core technology is the optimization of forming process parameters and micro-structure control in raw material. Forming features for raw materials can be secured through the optimization of loaddeformation, metal flow characteristics, stress & distortion, and energy distribution, and spheroidized annealing process optimization. The fourth is technology of securing mold durability.

It can lubricate the mold, extend the service life with heat and surface treatment, and minimize damage through stress interpretation. Trial products were manufactured based on such core element technologies, and final improvement could be made through characteristic evaluation. Also, mass- production technique could be secured through standardization, and industrialization could succeed.
