Hyundai Motors Invests Strategically in ‘Migo,’ a U.S. Mobility Service Company

Establishing a global business belt such as car sharing, car hailing, etc.

 

Hyundai Motor carried out a strategic investment for mutual cooperation with Migo, a mobility-as-a-service company of the United States, and has set the stage for entering the local sharing economy market.
Migo was established in 2016 in Seattle, USA, and unveiled a new concept service of the multiple mobility integration from last year.
The multiple mobility integration means a service connecting optimal car sharing to customers through the smartphone application. In this process, Migo makes a profit by receiving commissions from the sharing company to which it has connected users.
If users enter the destination that they want to go, the Migo application provides diverse information that the users can see at a glance, such as the price of the service, the time required, etc., of various sharing companies. The application helps the users compare and select the company that is most economical and suitable for them.
Related to this, the Migo application provides comparative information on the car hailing companies such as Uber, Lyft, Mytaxi, etc. and bike-sharing companies like LimeBike and Spin, as well as the U.S. car sharing companies including Car2Go, Zipcar, etc. It also supports information on public transit such as buses, subway, etc.
Since launching in Seattle and Portland, Migo has now expanded its service offerings to 75 major cities in the USA, including New York, Los Angeles, Washington and Chicago.
Hyundai Motors plans to acquire know-how on the overall mobility business of the United States with its strategic investment in Migo as a momentum and acquire the competence and technology to lead the future mobility market.
In particular, as the investment in Migo was arranged at a comparatively early stage and Hyundai Motors is the only car manufacturer among the investors, it is expected that the synergy effect following the cooperation between the two companies will be considerable.
Meanwhile, through the partnership with Migo this time, Hyundai Motors has come to build a ‘Mobility Business Belt’ connecting the USA, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
Regarding the European region, Hyundai Motors is conducting a car-sharing business, jointly with Ionic EV in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. As for the Asia-Pacific region, Hyundai Motors has made a preemptive investment in Revv which is an Indian car-sharing firm, Mesh Korea which is a last mile delivery service specialist in Korea, Grab which is Southeast Asia’s largest car-hailing company, Immotor, which is a Chinese battery sharing company for last-mile transport means, and Car Next Door which is an Australian peer-to-peer car-sharing firm.

Ballast Water Treatment System

Since then, IMO enacted the Ballast Water Management Convention (BWM Convention) in 2004 to prevent destruction of the marine environment by harmful microorganisms in ballast water, and TECHCROSS Inc. developed the ballast water treatment system by grafting the existing electrolysis technology to ballast water and obtained a basic approval for it in 2006 for the first time in the world.
TECHCROSS Inc. has been setting a record such as succeeding in the installation of an explosion-proof product for the first time in the world, and of VLCC product for the first time in the industry, and conquering the global market with excellent product performance and installation knowhow. It obtained a type approval from USCG in June 2018, the first in Korea which is expected to become a new solution for continuing long-term recessions of marine equipment.
ECS (Electro-CleenTM System), the ballast water treatment system developed by TECHCROSS Inc., treats microorganisms in ballast water using an electrolysis principle. In other words, it electrically sterilizes seawater directly at the same time it flows into a ship and passes an electrolysis chamber. At this time, as seawater passes between electrodes in the chamber, it is disinfected by three different disinfection methods, disinfection by a potential difference, disinfection by radicals generated momentarily by an electrochemical reaction and chlorine contents, generated at the time of electrolysis, remaining in the ballast water tank and blocking regeneration of microorganisms. Through these, disinfection can be done more perfectly.
ECS not only has excellent sterilizing power but is also compact in size which is easy to install in a confined space. It has low power consumption and saves operating time and cost because it satisfies an emission standard with just one treatment when ballasting. Above all, TECHCROSS Inc. has the unique advantage of having more sufficient knowledge and experience in the industry than anyone else as they started on the business as soon as the market for ballast water treatment was formed.
Recently, TECHCROSS Inc. developed an indirect treatment system besides the treatment system using a direct electrolysis method, and maintained a systematic AS service system to quickly respond to customers’ enquiries related to the approval and product operation.

Production and Exports of Car

Increased by 8.1% and 2.1%, respectively in August, compared with the same period of the previous year

 

Production, export and domestic sales of South Korea’s finished vehicles all increased, together with export of auto parts.
According to ‘On Domestic Auto Industry of August’ issued by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, production, export and domestic sales of the finished vehicles increased by 8.1%, 2.1% and 5.0% respectively compared with the same period of the previous year, and export of car parts also increased by 0.5%.
Major finished vehicle companies produced 296,471 vehicles, increased by 8.1% compared with the same period of the previous year, due to early pay settlement, recovery of domestic sales and export, etc.
In addition, exports recorded 174,869 vehicles, increased by 2.1% compared with the same period of the previous year, due to full-scale export expansion of new sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and increase of exports to the Middle East and the European region. In terms of the amount, exports recorded US$28.5 billion, an increased of 0.5%.


Domestic sales of vehicles turned up to be 146,086 units, increased by 5.0% compared with the same period of the previous year, due to implementation of the individual consumption tax reduction to passenger cars and new SUVs (Carnival and Santa Fe). Related to this, sales of domestic cars and imported cars increased by 4.1% to 125,289 units and by 11.2% to 20,797 units respectively.
Especially, in the case of eco-friendly cars, domestic sales of electric cars increased drastically, amounting to 8,640 units, an increase of 9.5% compared with the same period of the previous year. Among them, the hybrid cars and electric vehicles accounted for 6,572 units (up 3.6%) and 1,971 units (up 31.5%), respectively.
The domestic sales volume of major electric cars last month comprised 648 units of ‘Kona EV,’ 399 units of ‘Soul EV,’ and 631 units of ‘Volt EV.’
Exports of these cars also increased by 25.7% compared with the same period of the previous year, recording 15,926 units. Among them, the numbers of hybrid cars and electric cars sold were 11,650 units (up 17.3%) and 2,731 units (up 153.3%), respectively, thanks to the good performance of Hyundai Motor’s Ionic hybrid and electric car models.
Meanwhile, export of auto parts last month recorded US$1.87 billion, an increase of 0.5% compared with the same period of the previous year, due to expansion of exports to North America and the European region despite decrease of exports to Asia and Europe.

The 1st Vietnam International Machinery Fair

The 1st VIMAF is anticipated to play a role as a strategic marketing platform to lead diversification of the general machinery export markets.

 

The 1st Vietnam International Machinery Fair (VIMAF) will be held at the SECC Exhibition Center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from December 12 (Wed.) to 14 (Fri.). It is expected to act as a strategic marketing platform to lead diversification of the general machinery export markets. Three hundred booths (4,400m²) of a total of 100 companies worldwide will be installed and manned.
Domestic and overseas exhibitors will display metal working and mold related equipment, automated instruments, construction and mining machinery, plant apparatus, textile machinery, farming machinery, rubber plastic, tools, hydropneumatic equipment, general industrial machinery, parts, materials, etc. in this fair.
This fair is hosted by the Korea Association of Machinery Industry (KOAMI) and COEX and supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and KOTRA in Korea and by the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade and Vietnamese Association of Machinery Industry in Vietnam.
In this fair, export consultation meetings will be held in the seminar room of the exhibition center from December 13 (Thu.) to 14 (Fri.) for Korean participants and Vietnamese buyers/agencies. In these export consultation meetings, 1:1 consultations will take place. Furthermore, a specialized conference hosted by the Ho Chi Minh City Office of the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology will be held from December 12 (Wed.) to 13 (Thu.).
There are many driving forces behind this 1st VIMAF. It is being promoted amidst Vietnam’s rise as the most powerful alternative to post-China since China has become a less attractive destination for investment due to high wages and costs and declining economic growth. While foreign investment enterprises keep investing more in the Vietnamese manufacturing industry, their parts and materials procurement rate is under 30%. They are desperately in need of higher-value added by attracting investment in the entire manufacturing industry. Therefore, the Vietnamese government is taking active steps for development of the parts/materials industry to improve the nation’s industrial competitiveness. Vietnamese government’s policy to develop the parts/materials industry works as a green light for Korean manufacturing companies including the machinery industry and the electricity/electronics industry to enter the Vietnam market.


Currently, general machinery export of South Korea is heavily weighted toward China and the United States. So, there is an urgent need to diversify export markets and to establish a strategic marketing platform in new machinery markets in Southeast Asia. Accordingly, the timing of this fair is very opportune. The machinery industry is the basis of national competitiveness and a core industry of the manufacturing industry which has a significant front and back relating effect.
For these reasons, it is expected that dominating promising new markets, such as Vietnam for instance, in advance will surely help expand the basis for Korean small-and medium-sized enterprises’ advances into foreign markets.
While South Korean companies are losing ground in the global markets due to China and America’s protectionism and strengthened support for their own companies, this fair will not only be a proper response to this challenging environment, but also give them added impetus to conquer other markets.
VIMAF will assist Korean companies to combat this recently hardening commercial pressure by the G2 and to maximize export potential by expanding the Korean machinery export market to ASEAN ― with Vietnam as a base ― in the long-term. Thus, this fair is expected to raise Korea’s economic growth and global competitiveness.
