Korean Marine Equipment Makers Seek Ways to Boost Their Global Presence amidst Fierce Competition

For the global marine equipment industry, the demand for developing newer technology is increasing with the rising demand for high-value vessels, coupled with the growing need for offshore drill ships and related facilities development.

In response to the changing global shipbuilding market and the marine equipment market, most of Korea’s small and medium-sized marine equipment manufacturers are seeking ways to develop stronger capability to develop advanced technology, escaping from their positions as manufacturers of simply producing marine equipment.

Korea’s marine equipment manufacturers were being significantly affected by the nation’s shipbuilders’ order performances from overseas markets, which saw their decreased growth in order quantities for a considerable time because of the sluggish global economy.

The recent signals in the global shipbuilding markets, including the increasing trend toward the manufacturing of multi-purpose vessels, the growing necessity of replacing the existing old ships, the growing demand for development of new concept vessels, and growing requirement for higher functionequipped ships, are growing into a positive aspect of challenges both for the nation’s shipbuilders and marine equipment makers.

Since 2010, the orders for marine plant-related vessels including drill ships, semi-rig, FPSO, fixed platform, etc. has increased. In line with this situation, development and production of various kinds of essential equipment for those vessels led by the nation’s advanced institutes is being carried out.

In order for the nation’s medium- and small-sized companies to effectively meet such big challenges through developing and manufacturing equipment deserved to be fully applied at the globally demanded high-profile vessels, insufficient but new attempts of the various levels of measures, including shifting their energy to the intensified R&D led by some leading equipment makers.

MOKPO CCI
Korea has the world’s No.1 shipbuilding industry competitiveness in terms of design, manufacturing, and management, focused on high value-added vessels, but the corresponding capacity to design and manufacture technologies of quality marine equipment falls short of those of shipbuilding.

An observer familiar with the nation’s current marine equipment industry said “The dependency of South Korea’s marine equipment especially in the advanced technologies that are keys to the majority of the highly required highprofile vessels on the overseas markets is regrettably still almost 100%. In terms of the marine equipment’s quality that is connected to the performance of the certain vessels, raising strong marine equipment manufactures is of essential to the boosting not only of the marine equipment industry, but also the shipbuilding industry, as well.”

There are two main regions comprising the nation’s shipbuilding industry – South Jeolla Province(Yeongam County); and Busan& Gyeongnam Province. Including the world’s sixth large-scale shipbuilder, Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, the nation’s two representative medium-sized shipbuilders, Daehan Shipbuilding and Shin Heavy Industries are located in the former region. More than 70percent of companies operating in the Daebul Industrial Complex in Yeongam are, in particular, engaged in manufacturing toplevel shipbuilding & marine equipment and leisure boats(yachts) forming a mega-sized shipbuilding cluster.

Korea Buyers Guide coves eight major companies recommended by Mokpo CCI in order for us to fully introduce these companis to overseas markets, thus increasing awareness of these enterprises in the global market.

Market Leading Technology-leading Korean Automotive Items Set to Draw Strong Attention at AAPEX 2013

201309M_main

https://korean-machinery.com///inquiryAs this year’s most representative opportunity to generate business opportunities, the forthcoming AAPEX2013 is keenly attracting Korean car makers and automotive parts makers.

Equipped with advanced technology in high demand for globally hot solutions, some 70 domestic makers in the field are expected to join the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo, slated for Nov.

5-7 in Las Vegas, the U.S.A. Their competitive products, ranging from automotive parts and accessories to car maintenance equipment, others, will be staged at the Korea Pavilion to be run by the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency(KOTRA) and they are expected to attract ardent attention from the anticipated 50,000buyers attending the
show from all over the world.

Under fierce global competition, South Korean companies are seeking ever-creative efforts not only to move into remaining niche markets, but also to fortify the existing global presence. As a representative case of these, Hyundai Dymos has decided to break ground on its $35million plant near its sister company Kia Motors’ assembly plant in Georgia, USA, in October this year.

Hyundai Dymos, a maker of transmissions and seats for passenger cars, plans to provide its products to Kia making it easier for the car maker to beef up its market position there.

And in Korea, new highly competitive items are being released by both automotive makers and parts makers, an aggressive move against the overall global market trend of increasingly tough competition.

201309M_main1

As a representative example, a group of researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) recently developed a possible solution to such problems: a foldable, compact electric vehicle that can be utilized either as a personal car or part of the public transit system to connect major transportation routes within a city.

Korea’s automobile production in June 2013 decreased 6.5% over a year earlier to 394,386units, due to overall sales decline coupled with supply shortages. Production during the first half of the year shrank by 4.3% at 2,279,790units, while 2013 production is expected to increase 0.8% to 4,600,000 units.

Despite new model release effect of Maxcruz, all new Carens and KorandoTurismo, domestic demand in June 2013 lost 7.9% to 114, 251units, owing to the continued overall economic slowdown, contracted purchasing power with the burden of household debt and inroads of imported cars.

Home sales in the first half of the year recorded 676,823units, down 2.6%. Exports in June 2013 fell by 8.3% to 275,528units, attributed to increased economic uncertainty by U.S. reduction plans of quantitative easing, the trend of the yen’s devaluation and increased overseas production of Korean cars.

The vehicle exports in July this year fell by 7.3% to 223,482units, on account of expanded economic uncertainty by U.S. reduction plans of quantitative easing, supply shortages and increased offshore production of Korean brand. Exports in the first seven months were down 6.6% recording 1,812,796units.

A Group of Korean Textile Machinery Manufacturers to Scan Chinese Market

agktmmscm1
At present, roughly 75% of the world’s textile machinery demand is generated by the Asian market, including China and some Southeast Asian counties, meaning the region is enjoying an activated market for textiles and related items.

South Korea has an approximate 5% share of the global textile machinery market. As for exports, the nation has achieved steady annual average growth of more than 10% with main items of embroidery machines, dyeing machines, importing spinning machines, and test equipment – since it recorded $821million in earnings in 2002.

The Korean textile machinery industry – which comprises mainly small and medium-sized companies with a ratio of 85%- is ever strengthening its focus on R&D in an attempt to gain more advantages over foreign competitors.

For obtaining higher-level technology competitiveness, the nation sets its top priority on development of IT-converged textile machinery and recently started development of IT& NT-converged high-tech products.

In order for Korean companies to effectively cope with the diverse demands of the global market, various marketing activities such as bolstering strategic items, group-level participation in overseas exhibitions, pioneering of new potential foreign markets are being carried out.

The South Korean textile industry sees a slightly improved competitiveness of the textile export due to the effectuation of the KORUS FTA, but also declining production of textile machinery due to a series of causes such as the weakened price competitiveness of Korean-made textile machinery and sluggish investment caused by the limited demand for equipment in the local market.

The export of Korean textile machinery is expected to maintain its steady decline, triggered by some negative factors including falling exchange rate, fierce competition, and global rival nations’ rising new investment. The import of high-value textile products including industrial textiles, special-purposes of textiles is on the rise – becauseof Korean buyers’ preference for the textile machinery manufactured abroad. The total imports are expected to continue to decline depending on some positive components of newly released high-quality Korean equipment, price competitiveness over those of advanced nations.

At the upcoming ITMA ASIA 2013, KOTMA(Korea Textile Machinery Association)supported a total of 24 Korean companies to promote their market-leading textile machinery and related solutions targeting mainland China and its neighboring regions. Korean exhibitors will examine whether the favorable environment for them to push ahead with their business plans will continue.

Highly Competitive Ship Diesel Engine Maker

[INQ. NO. 1303M10] Speaking of today’s engine, it all started with simple prehistoric tools like oars for boats. Technological advancement enabled machine-based engines to replace ones that relied solely on human or animal power. With superior horsepower capacity and efficiency, diesel engines are widely used for automobiles, aircraft, heavy machinery, etc. For ships, Korea’s Daedong Marine Tech took the marine industry by surprise with its next-generation diesel engine.

Began in 1993, Daedong Marine Tech always has supported the fishing industry with what they can best offer: technical solutions. Evenly spread growth across the industry was its main interest, and the firm is confident and proud of its years of contribution to the development through improving mechanical performance.

This marine diesel engine manufacturer’s tenacity and innovative ideas turns out to be critical recipes for success. Its main products are marine diesel engines and generators guaranteed by international certificates such as CE, ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO 9002, etc.

Greeting today’s “Low Carbon Green Growth, ”Daedong Marine Tech comes up with various fuel-wise diesel engines. In close technological collaboration with one of Korea’s major car makers, Hyundai, the firm is capable of producing durable diesel engines with distinctive quality.

This lightweight, compact engine uses relatively less oil to maximize its performance with high power and efficiency. While minimizing subsequent vibration, Daedong Marine Tech’s diesel engines’ components such as cooling lines, heat exchangers, large oil pumps are known to be highly anti-corrosive and durable.

Daedong Marine Tech has recently developed a 335 horsepower low-pollution ship diesel engine, the nation’s first move, following 500 and 430 horsepower ones, in consistent cooperation with Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology. A professor who unknown but professionally engaged in developing the engine product said “The newly developed 335 horsepower ship diesel engine can be fully used for small-sized ships and leisure boats. It will contribute to decreasing air pollution in the seas and thus preserving the global environment as it emits NOx into the air in noticeably less amounts.”

On-Line Electric Vehicle (OLEV)

DSC_0533 (31)

OLEV (On-line Electric Vehicle) technology uses inductive coupling and wireless electromagnetic transmission to power electric vehicles (cars, buses, vans etc) during operation. This is achieved by attaching pick-up coil sets under the bottom floor of an electric vehicle in order to receive electromagnetic fields from power cables installed under the road surface. The power is also used to charge an on-board battery which is used to power the vehicle when it is off line. These vehicles use one fifth of the battery of a normal electric vehicle. With a ground height of 20cm and a 75kW power capacity, an OLEV can achieve a transmission efficiency of 83%.

사본 - p10000000000ab7

The OLEV developed by KAIST operates on the electric energy converted from the magnetic field which is generated by electric power cables laid under the road (15 cm), using the pick-up devices mounted on the bottom of the vehicle.

The OLEV system doesn’t need charging stations because the vehicle is charged wirelessly in real time while running on the road. Since its battery capacity also is reduced to 20% of that of a typical pure electric vehicle, the OLEV is regarded as an enabling technology to speed up the commercialization of electric vehicles.

The OLEV technology was successfully applied and demonstrated in Seoul Grand Park by installing about 400m of power cables on 2.2km circular track and operating an OLEV tram. Furthermore, KAIST Wireless Power Transfer Research Center has decided to launch the electrification projects in Park City, Utah, United States and Kuala Lumpur Airport, Malaysia.
