Becoming a Global Leader in the Power and Water Sectors With 14 World-Class Products

[INQ. NO. 1601M57] Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. has become a leader in the power and water sectors, having produced 14 world-class products, including the seawater desalination plant it built in 2001 and other various products, including its crankshaft and reactor vessel.https://korean-machinery.com///inquiry

The Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy selects as ‘World-Class Products of Korea’ products with distinctly competitive features and which boast of a global market share of over 5% and ranks within the global top five among companies that record an annual global sales of over US $ 50 million.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s flagship world-class product is the seawater desalination plant, as revealed in how it has maintained the number one spot in its field worldwide. Doosan has secured its international competitiveness by developing advanced
technologies, shortening the delivery lead time and improving product quality, in the face of the stiff competition being posed by European and Japanese global companies who started entering the market in the late 1970s.

1

In the 2000s, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction won the largest number of desalination plant contracts in the Middle East, including the Fujairah, UAE and Shuaibah, Saudi Arabia, and also occupied the largest share of the global market (27%). In fact, for the past 30 years, Doosan has been awarded a total of 28 seawater desalination projects across the Middle East, including in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.

Seawater desalination plants can be largely divided into three types; Multi-Stage Flash (MSF), MED and Reverse Osmosis (RO). Doosan is the only company in the world that has the technologies and expertise for all three methods.

In particular, as the leading desalination solutions provider, Doosan has succeeded in shortening the lead time remarkably by developing the world’s first One- Module manufacturing method, which involves assembling the evaporator, which is the size of a soccer field, all in one and shipping it on a large barge to the local site.

Along with the seawater desalination plant, Doosan’s other distinctive world-class item is the reactor vessel installed in nuclear power plants. The reactor is a cylindrical pressure vessel that generates heat through nuclear fuel fission. It is the core facility of a nuclear
power plant that delivers high-temperature and pressurized cooling water to the steam generator. The Korean-designed nuclear power plant model, the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR 1400), is an advanced pressurized water nuclear reactor, a large facility with a height of 14.8m, a diameter of 5.5m, and a weight of 530 tons. Doosan has supplied a total of 19 units to clients across the world since its first production in 1987.

2

Doosan’s advanced reactor vessel is designed for the APR 1400, developed by domestic engineering entities, such as Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, KEPCO Engineering & Construction and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction. It features an extended life
cycle of 60 years, thereby reducing the cost of nuclear power plants significantly.

In December 2013, two items developed by Doosan were selected as world-class products – the integral head and excitation system for nuclear power plants. One year later, the 3MW wind turbine, WinDS3000™ was selected as a Next-Generation World-Class product.

The integral head is made of cast and forged material which cover the upper and lower parts of the reactor vessel and steam generator, all of which are core facilities of nuclear power plants. The integral head developed by Doosan is the all-in-one type built without welding, so that the shut-down period can be minimized for maintenance inspection during plant operation. Doosan’s product currently has the largest global market share. The excitation system is a core component of nuclear power plants that controls the output voltage of the generator. Doosan supplied the world’s first digital excitation system with three current controllers for a more stable operation.

WinDS3000™ is the offshore 3MW wind power system which was internationally certified for the first time in Asia in 2011. It boasts of greatly strengthened safety and stability, helping to increase resistance to typhoons and warm currents. In addition, WinDS3000™
which was developed using Doosan’s very own technologies, guarantees quick maintenance and repair, thereby reducing operating costs.

Trading Community Prefers Japan, Russia and GCC as Next FTA Partners

It appears that the free trade agreement (FTA) with Japan is the most wanted by the Korean trading community. In the survey of 762 trading companies conducted by the Korea International Trade Association, Japan (35.4%) was selected as the most preferred country for the next free trading partner, followed by Russia (11.4%), GCC (8.5%), and
MERCOSUR (8.0%).

The report titled “New FTA Strategy from the Perspective of Trading Community” published by the Institute for International Trade (President, Kim Geuk-soo, htt p://iit.kita.net) suggests the list of countries for the next FTAs as well as the requests that
the trading companies are interested in based on the “New FTA Strategies” released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in April, last year. The survey result shows that as Korea has completed the FTAs with the large economic regions such as the U.S.
and China, the trading companies expect to have the FTAs with Japan, which has large trading volume as well as market size, and the emerging countries with big potential. Large companies selected MERCOSUR and SMEs selected Russia as the second favorite
countries for the next FTAs, following Japan. On the other hand, regarding mega FTAs that Korea is currently negotiating or interested in participating, 52 percent of the respondents said that Korea should pursue the Korea-China-Japan FTA as a priority.

Majority of respondents said it is required to exert efforts to improve quality of the FTAs when negotiating the agreements. As things to consider when signing FTAs in the future, ‘the simplifi cation of the FTA use such as rules of origins (multiple responses, 58.8%)’ was the major concern, followed by ‘instant elimination of tariff s’, ‘improvement of customs procedure’ and ‘wider and higher level of opening’.

Meanwhile, 72.8 percent of participants said the FTAs that are currently in eff ect need to be improved. Particularly, 41.6 percent of them responded that the Kore-India CEPA should be revised. In fact, the use rate in export of the Korea-India CEPA was only 56.3 percent, which is signifi cantly low compared to other FTAs, followed by the Korea-U.S FTA (31.4%) and the Korea-ASEAN FTA (30.4%).

Lee Hye-yeon, a researcher at the FTA and Regional Studies department of KITA, said “In order for Korean companies to target overseas markets, Korea needs to actively work on the FTAs with the emerging countries which have large market size as well as high growth potentials such as Russia, GCC and MERCOSUR”. She also stressed “Pursuing the FTAs with many countries is important. However, in order to expand the companies’ use of FTAs, it is required to reflect the communities’ demands, such as securing practical market opening, simplifying procedures, etc. when negotiating”.

‘MODU’ Marine Waste Crusher

[INQ. NO. 1601M54] SUNGMOON, specializes in manufacturing marine andhttps://korean-machinery.com///inquiry offshore waste disposal products, and during the years, has been delivering the goods to Hyundai Heavy industries, Wartsila Hyundai Engine, STX engine, and other major shipbuilding and engine companies in the world. Recently, SUNGMOON launched a brand named ‘MODU’ as part of the marine environment management project, and developed a marine waste crusher on its own as the first product of its kind.
According to a completely revised IMO MARPOL ANNEX V (Prevention of pollution by garbage from ships), the discharge of marine waste from ships is completely prohibited except in some conditions. Consequently, as it is inevitable to unload generated waste, additional problems occur such as lack of waste loading space and unloading cost.

SUNGMOON’s marine waste crusher ‘MODU’ can solve those problems all at once. As this product was designed by taking into account the voltage tailored to the ship environment, crushable materials, size, etc., the volume of various wastes generated from ships can be effectively reduced by only one model compared to the other crushers. In addition, the crusher has an automated recovery function that can protect the cutter and motor from any damage at the overload, so it guarantees the longer life time. As of now, SUNGMOON completed the supply contracts of this crusher with major shipbuilding companies and marine companies at home and abroad, and will also release additional marine environment related product lines.
