S. Korean companies are energetically seeking ways to overcome challenges of the global market

1According to the data released by the Korea Customs Service (KCS), the country’s trade surplus reached $6.65 billion last month, signifi cantly down from the $8.89 billion reported for September. However, the nation posted a trade surplus for the 45th month in a row in October as imports dropped at a faster pace than exports.
Korea’s trade growth was being hurt by the sluggish demand in China, where there is a policy of supporting domestic industry and demand to sustain the world’s secondlargest
economy amid moderate growth in exports. The Korea Economic Research Institute (KERI) recently announced that Korea’s trade surplus with China fell by 13 percent to $35.3 billion in the fi rst nine months this year from $40.4 billion the same period a year ago. This year-on-year fall is steeper than the full-year 12-percent decline from $62.8 billion in 2013 to $55.2 billion in 2014.
The nation’s export companies are seeking ways to embrace these challenging conditions in the China market, mainly by obtaining comparative superiority over China’s competitors per industry. The eight companies to be introduced through this year’s 12th edition of Korea Buyers Guide are of some of those facing such tough market conditions both in China and globally, but they are representative of a circle of Korean industry succeeding in overcoming such challenges.

Growth of presence of Korean auto parts makers in major global markets

Korea’s automotive production and exports, in March, turned out to be decreased 2.6% year-on-year despite the favorable tendency of domestic sales (up 8.8%). The fall in automotive production and exports is attributable to the sluggish economy in emerging markets including Russia, the intensifying competition with Japanese companies due to the weakened yen and the oil producers’ shrinking demand by the drop in oil prices.

According to automotive industry trend data released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) in March, the automotive production in the month was 414,352 units of vehicle, down 2.6% from the same period of last year. Exports amounted to 277,874 units of vehicles, also reflecting a 2.6% drop.

Growth-of-presence-of-Korean And vehicle production in February fell 12.0 percent when compared to the same month last year to 317,746 units. Excluding Renault Samsung, all major domestic automakers witness a decreased production due to sluggish exports and two less working days than the same month last year.

Domestic sales in the month were down 3.6 percent over a year before to 104,053 units, as a result of a drop in sales of small-and large-sized cars, in spite of strong demand for new and redesigned models such as Ssangyong’s Tivoli compact SUV, GM Korea’s 2015 Cruze, and Renault Samsung’s SM5 Nova.

Exports in the month dropped 13.7 percent to 211,596 units, affected by sluggish exports to emerging markets such as Russia and Latin America, fewer working days, and the economic downturn in the Middle East caused by the drop in oil prices, coupled with the aging of key models. Meanwhile, exports during the month fell slightly by 1.2% over the month last year due to big drop to CIS including Russia in spite of growth in most markets including the U.S.

Korean automotive part makers displayed their advanced solutions at Seoul Motor Show 2015, making big promotions as they expected. Maintaining good mode in the existing global big markets, the auto part makers are seeking ways to boost growth for this year in the global market.

Over 90 Korean companies to participate in Hannover Machinery Fair

Over 90 Korean companies to participate in Hannover Machinery Fair

Korea’s machinery industry, except for the shipbuilding industry, is expected to be in a gradual phase of recovery of exports and production this year based on the steadily growing economy in advanced countries including the United States, the EU, and Japan.

Meanwhile, such potential factors as the persistent low yen, the possibility of decreased investment in the Middle East, and the insufficient recovery of the Chinese economy are poised to negatively hinder the recovery of the domestic machinery industry.

According to an analysis by the Korea Association of Machinery Industry (KOAMI), for the nation’s five major machinery industries, except the shipbuilding industry for 2015, production and export are expected to record 467.4 trillion won (4.8%) and 194.4 billion won, respectively, with a trade surplus of $86.66 billion. For general machinery, production and exports are also poised to record 104.6 trillion won (3.0%) and $4748 billion, each, with surplus of $9.94 billion.

Hannover-Machinery-Fair According to the Association, this year’s machinery industry will be more positive than that of last year, but it is expected that there will be many negative factors facing the industry due to the slow recovery of the economy. Despite the export of Korean-made items to the markets of the United States, Europe, and Japan that are expected to continue at a good pace, if the trend of the low yen is prolonged, Korean items’ competition with those of Japan is expected to become even fiercer in global markets. Moreover, the recent sharp decrease of international oil prices is expected to become a strong factor weakening the investments by Middle East oil exporters.

Amid such forecasts, it is anticipated that more than 90 companies, the greatest number of companies except the 219 companies in the year of 2009 at a time when Korea’s companies participated in the exhibition exhibitors of partner country of the fair, will exhibit their cutting-edge product solutions and related technologies during the fair to be held from April 13 to 17, 2013, in Hannover, Germany. This year’s Korean makers will fully use the fair which will be composed of ten kinds of concurrent subevents for such major themes as industrial automation, MDA, energy, wind, mobiliTec, comvac, research & technology, digital factory, industrial supply, surface technology, so that it will be a most desirable venue for global companies including those from Korea to exchange each related section of new technologies, future industry, innovative ideas, and latest trends.

By joining in the global largest-scale machinery industry fair, Korean makers are expected to take advantage of the ample opportunities to intensify technological cooperation, especially with European counterparts, reinforce European recognition of Korea’s advanced technology level in the machinery field, further explore European markets and facilitate European investment in Korea.

Korea’s HVAC Products

Korea’s HVAC companies facing big challenge
from Chinese market

Korea’s HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) industry circle sets a further aggressive aim of advancing into new potential global markets including Southeast Asia through securing high-efficiency and ecofriendly technologies, based on continuous growth in both production and export. Now, Korea is ranked the world’s No. 4 in the industry.

Korea’s-HVAC Korea’s HVAC industry circle at an early stage grasped the potential importance of the HVAC industry as one of the indispensable industries in improving both the living environment and industry production process in a global scope.

Korea has early designated the industry as one of the major growth engines leading the national economy in the global markets while encouraging the companies associated to massively invest in this industry and thus to beef up the presence of those companies in an increasingly competitive global market.

Korean companies’ timely advance into promising markets is expected to spread technological recognition in the nation into the global market, thus contributing to the increase of their awareness in global markets.

One of the current hottest issues facing Korea’s HVAC industry is the massive influx of Chinese HVAC products into Korea. The influx of Chinese HVAC products would be accelerated when the recently signed Korea-China FTA officially comes into effect. Given the current situation when the influx of the nation’s HVAC products is visualized, the ratified FTA will help acceleration of the influx of Chinese products into Korean market.

Meanwhile, the recovery of the global economy and global high attention on the green industry will positively play for Korea’s HVAC companies, which have global competitiveness, especially against Chinese competitors in terms of technology power.

MOKPO CCI

Mokpo-based marine equipment enterprises to boost their market-competitiveness, invigorating the regional economy

As of 2009, the global marine equipment market was dominated by three key countries of South Korea, China, and Japan, recording around $83.4 billion in sales. The demand of the global marine equipment, in 2010, was largely created by a few leading nations – South Korea (37, 2%), China (37, 2%), Japan (18, 3%), and others (7.3%).

As the global marine base is increasingly shifting to the Asian region, the production capacity ratio of the marine equipment in the global market is also being moved to Asia, with Europe’s still comparative higher ratio than other global regions. As of 2010, the global marine equipment production was mainly made by Europe (48%), South Korea (22%), Japan (14%), China (11%), and others (5%), meaning that East Asia’s three major marine nations are continuously pursuing their stops as big hands in the global marine equipment production market.

The demand for developing newer technology in the global marine equipment industry is increasing with the rising demand for high-value vessels, coupled with the growing need for offshore drill ships and related facilities development.

MOKPO-CCI In response to the changing global marine market, most of S. Korea’s small-and medium-sized marine equipment manufacturers are seeking ways to develop stronger capability to develop advanced technology, escaping from their positions as manufacturers of simply producing marine equipment.

Korea’s marine equipment manufacturers were being significantly affected by the nation’s shipbuilders’ order performances from overseas markets Korean shipbuilders recent recorded their increased growth in order quantities for this year, making the nation the global NO.1 country.

When looking into Mokpo’s hinterland region of Jeollanam-do province, now a total of 197 companies including enterprises of vessel blocks operate, having a big effect on the regional economy. Regional companies with technology competitiveness exert their leadership in the global market, given the overall difficulties caused by the recent Europe-originated financial crisis. Meanwhile, an increasing number of companies are equipping themselves with their own technologies, so, if the marine economy is, in the near future, invigorated, such kinds of companies’ performances are expected to be conspicuous.

Korea Buyers Guide covers four major companies recommended by Mokpo CCI in order for us to fully introduce these companies to overseas markets, and thus to increase the awareness of these enterprises in the global market.

Korean machinery part

Korean machinery part makers to seek more aggressive advance into China market

A positive expectation is forming among Korean machinery circles that the recently concluded Korea-China FTA would be a factor generating benefit for them. According to the Korea Association of Machinery Industry (KOAMI), Korean companies will be likely to benefit from the FTA in terms of tariff rate – due to China’s average tariff rate (8.1%) is higher than that of Korea (6.6%).

As Korean-made machinery products have comparative advantages over those from China in terms of quality, the rate of Korean companies’ advance into Chinese market is expected to increase significantly in the medium-and longterm.

A spokesperson of the agency said “For most machinery products, China’s tariff rate is higher than that of Korea, so, if tariffs at the two sides are abolished at the same time, Korea will likely take advantage from it, but only export of lowpriced tools, parts and components is expected to gradually be increased because of China’s price competiveness.

Korean-machinery-part So, the need for expanding the technology gap with Chinese competitors is strongly emerging as an important issue Korean companies manufacturing low-priced machinery tools, parts and components to solve.

As of last year, China emerged as the world’s largest importer of Korean-made general machinery comprising 24.2% of Korea’s total machinery exports, but recently the balance of payments remains to be seen gradually decreased.

The following selected companies are some of Korea’s representative machinery part makers taking considerable dominance in the global market in their specific areas.

With keen interest from the Korean government and a governmental agency, they plan to elevate their more aggressive advance into the China market with an aim to increase the ratio of their market dominance than competitors worldwide, on the occasion of the recently concluded Korea-China FTA.
